Builders of Hope is BACK as a breakfast!

Tuesday, May 17th, 2022

7:30 to 9:30 AM

The Woodwinds

29 School Ground Rd, Branford, CT 06405

Our annual Builders of Hope event aims to bring together a supportive community who are collectively dedicated to improving the wellness and overall quality of life of others. As we have had to pivot to outdoor events and date delays due to the ongoing pandemic, we are excited to announce the return of our Builders of Hope event as a breakfast as it has traditionally been known.

About Our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Brenda Combs: Survivor, Advocate & Inspirational Educator

Dr. Brenda Combs is a symbol of inspiration and perseverance to all who meet her. Growing up in a middle class family in Arizona, Brenda fell into a bad crowd which led to her struggling with substance use, dropping out of school, and ending up homeless. Suffering multiple instances of trauma and violence, it took Brenda hitting rock bottom for her to decide she wanted to turn her life around. She documented this moment along with many others in her autobiography titled, “Finding My Shoes,” in which her shoes were stolen while she was homeless and she was forced to walk on the hot concrete on a hot summer’s day in California. Brenda went on to entering rehab and following her dreams of becoming an educator, receiving multiple degrees as a working single mother. Join us for an empowering morning as Brenda shares her story of survival, recovery, and how finding your self worth can lead to resiliency and success.

Event In Review:

17th Annual Builders of Hope at the Drive-In!

Wednesday, September 16th

7:00PM to 8:30PM

North Haven Fairgrounds

290 Washington Ave, North Haven, CT 06473

See photos from the event here

Our first ever Drive-In style event for this year’s Builders of Hope was the perfect way to enjoy an end-of-summer evening! Although we were not able to provide a live and in-person event, we were still able to bring everyone together in a healthy and safe manner and provide the same wonderful event.

Alice talked about the rising rates of overdoses and substance related deaths in Connecticut during COVID-19. Our guests learned more about our SAFE-Family Recovery program for individuals dealing with substance issues our support groups for family members and/or loved ones of people struggling with addiction.

Best-selling author and motivational speaker Nic Sheff detailed his earlier life, having been a teenager struggling with substance use and mental illness. He generously gave us an honest look at how complicated living with addiction can be. With support (and tough love) from his family, accessible resources and his own determination, Nic was able to overcome his addictions and get a mental health diagnosis. “Getting diagnosed as Bipolar helped me understand that my drug use was so much more than just wanting to get high,” he said. Nic emphasized the importance of understanding mental health as an essential component for treating--and curing--substance abuse.

Thank you to all who joined us on this special night. The generosity shown helps CB continue to provide services to the people who need it most. We hope to see you next year!
