Here at Clifford Beers, we do a lot; we have over 16 programs and a deep bench of services to help meet a variety of mental and emotional needs for children and families. If you think your child or family qualifies for these programs--or you have been referred to any of these from DCF--you can reach out to us and we will help you determine which program is the best fit for you. Outpatient Clinics:

Outpatient services deliver treatment to children and families facing a wide variety of presenting issues including, but not limited to, ADHD, depression, family conflict, adjustment difficulties, behavioral disorders, etc. Our outpatient services are designed to deliver trauma-informed therapy to children and families impacted by trauma.

Types of trauma experienced by families seen at Clifford Beers include domestic violence, sexual abuse, community violence and loss of a loved one. Outpatient Services can include individual, family and group therapy as well as medication management. The specific nature of the therapy and its frequency will be determined based on the needs of the child and their family.

Care Coordination:

 

Refer your family here

A family-focused program that uses the wraparound team model, meaning our Care Coordinators work with your child in every facet of their life including family, teachers, doctors, and other significant people or providers to deliver care that is consistent and reliable to your child. Care Coordinators lead the facilitation of this wraparound model of care based on the needs of the child and family. We assist your family in identifying issues, developing solutions, identifying community resources so your family can develop permanent connections within your community for future support.

The target population for Care Coordination are children and youth, ages birth through 18, who: have complex behavioral health needs; who display serious emotional and behavioral disturbances; require intensive coordination of multiple services to meet those needs and who are at risk to be, or have already been, separated from their family and/or, community (i.e. residential or hospital-level care) for the primary purpose of receiving mental health or behavioral health-related services.

Care Coordination covers the towns of Branford, East Haven, Guilford, Hamden, New Haven, North Branford, and North Haven.

Referral Process: 

Referrals come from anyone in the community or clinic including the family themselves. Children involved in DCF protective or voluntary services are not eligible for care coordination and respite care services. However, we have many other programs that can be joined from a DCF referral.

Project CATCH:

Project CATCH (Collaboration, Advocacy, and Treatment for CHildren) supports families recovering from violence or sexually related traumas. This program provides advocacy, case management, and support for children and their families who have suffered these types of traumas.

Project CATCH serves children who have experienced sexual abuse, sex trafficking, bullying or domestic violence; parents who were molested as children; parents and children who have experienced domestic violence; and parents, siblings, and household family members of sexually abused children.

Referral Process: Anyone can make a self-referral to the CATCH program provided there is a history of sexual abuse, domestic violence, human trafficking, physical abuse, bullying or teen dating violence. Child First:

The Child First program is an evidence-based, in-home intervention aimed at increasing the best possible outcomes in overall development for children aged birth to five years-old. A team composed of a Mental Health/Developmental Clinician and a Care Coordinator work with children and their caregivers to promote the best possible outcomes for children and their families.

​Types of services provided may include engagement; stabilization; assessment; a plan of care; two-generation, trauma-informed child-parent psychotherapy and parent guidance; mental health assessment and consultation; and care coordination.

  • Each team provides evening visits two nights per week until 7PM

Community Support for Families (CSF):

This program will engage families who have received a Family Assessment Response (FAR) from the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and connect them to concrete, traditional and non-traditional resources and services in their community.

This inclusive approach and partnership places the family in the lead role of their own service delivery. The role of the Community Support Worker (CSW) and the Parent Navigator (PN) are to assist the family in developing solutions, identifying community resources and supports based on need and help promote permanent connections for the family with an array of supports and resources within their community.

Emergency Mobile Crisis Services:

Our Mobile Crisis program at Clifford Beers is designed to deliver crisis assessment and stabilization to children and families in the Greater New Haven area. Types of crisis frequently assessed at CB include suicidal thoughts, homicidal thoughts, school avoidance, out of control and aggressive behaviors, depression, and anxiety.

This service also delivers crisis intervention treatment to children and families facing a wide variety of other presenting issues including, but not limited to, ADHD, family conflict, adjustment difficulties, autism spectrum disorders, behavioral disorders, etc.

 

Mobile Crisis Services is on-call hour from 7:30PM to 10PM Monday-Thursday, 5:30PM to 10PM on Friday and 1PM to 10PM on weekends and holidays. Emergency Mobile Crisis Services can be contacted by dialing 211 and dialing 1 and then 1 to get to a call specialist ASAP. 
 

Fees: Clifford Beers accepts most major insurances. All co-pays are due at the time of the visit. If needed, a self-pay arrangement can be made.

Fatherhood Engagement Services (FES):

FES provides intensive outreach, case management services and "24/7 Dads" group programming to fathers involved with an open DCF case. The purpose of this program is to enhance the level of involvement of fathers in their DCF case planning, provision of services and positive parenting. Fatherhood Engagement Services is a DCF funded program.

FES provides 2 different services Fathers will receive both of these services:

  • Parent Education program: The "24/7 Dads" program curriculum is twelve 2-hour sessions and will focus on teaching the "24/7 Dad" curriculum.

  • Case Management Services: One-on-one case management, not less than once per week, as needed to address needs emerging during the course of intervention.
     

Referral Process:

Referrals come from DCF only. The DCF staff review and approve all cases being referred for Fatherhood Engagement Specialist. Clifford Beers is serving DCF, Region 2, which covers Greater New Haven, Hamden, North Haven, East Haven, Branford, North Branford, Guilford, Madison, and Milford areas.

Hours and Days:

  • Monday-Friday, 9:00AM-5:00PM

  • Flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours as needed to accommodate the father’s needs and schedule

  • 24/7 Dads groups are run continuously throughout the year (evening and weekend hours will be offered as needed to meet father’s scheduling needs).
     

Fees: There is no fee for this service.

SAFE-Family Recovery:

SAFE-Family Recovery: Screening, Engagement, and Family Recovery Service is a Department of Children and Families (DCF) funded program that will provide substance use screening and home/community-based support services for parents/caregivers who need additional resources to sustain their recovery.
 

SAFE-FR provides 4 different services:
 

  1. SBIRT- Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment

  2. MDFR- Multidimensional Family Recovery

  3. RMCS- Recovery Management Check-Ups and Support

  4. Hair Testing (for substance use)
     

Locations include:
 

  • Bridgeport and Norwalk DCF Offices: By appointment

  • Homes: By appointment

  • Clinic Offices: By appointment

Marne Street Clinic (Autism/ID/DD):

The Marne Street Clinic serves children and adults with Autism, Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities as a place where individuals and families will receive the full range of services needed to improve their health and quality of life, allowing them to reach their fullest potential physically, intellectually and socially.

The focus will be on the patients and their environment, including personal, social, academic, physical and occupational functioning.​

Types of services provided may include individual, family or group therapy as well as medication management. Referrals during the start-up phase may include psychiatry, crisis intervention, speech and language pathology, applied behavior analysis, nutritional services, and care coordination.

Psychiatry services may include individual, family and group therapy as well as medication management. Where appropriate, referrals are made for additional services, e.g., care coordination.

Medication Questions: Questions about side effects (that are not life-threatening), contact the clinic for support ext 1264. After hours if you are unable to reach the clinic or the answering service, please contact your pediatrician or primary care doctor for support.

Psychological (Testing and Assessment) Services:

Psychological (testing and assessment) services can identify and clarify a diagnosis. Listed here are some of the things we can determine with testing tools:
 

  • IQ (intelligence quotient)

  • Learning Disabilities

  • Effects of Trauma/Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Attachment Disorder

  • Psychosis

  • Anxiety and Mood Disorders

  • Autism/Developmental Disorders (ADOS-2)

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

  • Personality Disorders

  • Risk to self and others
     

Where does testing happen?

Typically, all tests and assessments happen at a Clifford Beers facility.  All testing is done at 41 Marne Street whereas your assessments and follow up appointments may take place at a secondary clinic location. Please confirm your location when making your appointment.

 

How long does it take?

The length of a test or assessment will depend on many factors. Generally, multiple sessions will be needed to complete the test or assessment. 

 

What happens after a test or assessment?

Everyone who is tested or assessed is invited to return for a feedback session. Clifford Beers is committed to helping you understand your test results and will help you secure the care you need.

School-Based Services:

School services are designed to deliver trauma-informed clinical and/or care coordination support to children and families in school and community settings. Embedding support in your child’s school reduces the barriers that many families experience when seeking help (i.e. transportation).​

School Services can include individual, family and group therapy, care coordination, as well as medication management. Trauma screening may also be provided at your child’s school to assess the need for services. The specific nature of the therapy and its frequency will be determined based on the needs of the child and their family. Families may also receive care coordination support (6 months, in-home/community) to increase community resources and support family stability. Where appropriate, referrals are made for additional services.

Hours and days will vary according to your child’s school hours and their school schedule. Services may take place at your residence (i.e. care coordination) or your child’s school, during the school day and will be scheduled as best as possible to not interfere with your child’s academic classes.

Fees: Clifford Beers accepts most major insurances. All co-pays are due at the time of the visit. If needed, a self-pay arrangement can be made. Insurance or payment is not required for all services (i.e. care coordination).

Specialized Services:

This outpatient level of care is designed for children and adolescents of any gender, ages 4-18, who are relatively successful in the community, but have a history of, or are currently engaging in, problematic sexual behaviors.

Interventions are aimed at:

  • addressing the impact of traumatic experiences

  • increasing age-appropriate coping strategies

  • developing emotional regulation and empathy to improve family relations

  • increasing self-competence

Speech Therapy:

Speech therapy serves children and adults with Autism, Intellectual, and Developmental Disabilities who have speech and/or language disorders based on assessment. Types of delays and disorders that may be treated include language delays, articulation disorders, receptive and expressive language disorders, phonological disorders, apraxia of speech, social language disorders and fluency disorders.

Goals will focus on teaching the child and/or caregivers’ strategies to improve communication in their environment. If your child is receiving speech services through their school, we ask you to provide a copy of their IEP.

The Speech Therapy Program offers assessments to determine strengths and weaknesses in all areas of speech and language. Based on the assessment, clients who present with a speech and/or language disorder will be offered individual or group therapy sessions depending on the client’s needs.

  • Call and schedule an appointment for services. Appointments are available Monday - Friday based on availability.

  • Speech therapy appointments may be recommended once or twice weekly based on your child’s assessed need.

All groups are available to current clients of Clifford Beers via referral.

Girls Circle Group

Ages 12-17

Girls Circle is an evidence-based model that promotes resilience in adolescent girls as well as aims to increase healthy connections with peers.

 

Identity Group

Ages 12-17

Thursdays 5-6 PM

This group is for clients who want help and support figuring out who they are by identifying sets of attributes, beliefs and values that are important to them and represent their character. All youth who identify within the LGBTQIA+ community or are questioning are welcome.

 

Young Teen Group

Middle School Age

Wednesdays 6-7 PM

This group supports young teens struggling with, but not limited to, social interactions, boundaries, positive self-image, and healthy relationships. This group focuses on building self-esteem and positive social interactions to improve self-image, social skills and create healthy relationships for individuals participating in the group

 

Adolescent Group 

High School Age

Tuesdays 6-7 PM

This group supports adolescents struggling with, but not limited to, anxiety or depression, may be socially awkward or shy, and/or previous bullying or previous suicidal ideation or self harm. The group focuses on boundaries, respect, sense of self, coping skills, communication,
and relationships.

 

ASD/ID Marne Street Groups:

These groups are available to all youth who have completed the intake process at Clifford Beers and are current clients receiving care from our Marne Street Clinic which provides services for Autism and other developmental/behavioral conditions.

Social Skills

Ages 7-10

Mondays at 6 PM

Children in this group are provided with a supportive environment in which to practice basic skills to promote social success such as greeting others, showing attention to others, taking turns speaking, communicating one's own needs, accepting differences in peers, and recognizing and respecting the personal space needs of others. Children are provided with the opportunity to use fidgets and move
around as needed while learning to do so in ways that allow the group to continue to function. Learning of skills is done primarily in the context of games and play. (For ASD/ID clients or clients with lower cognitive abilities or struggles with social skills) 

 

Social Skills

Ages 11-14

Wednesdays at 6 PM

Youth in this group are provided with the opportunity to learn and practice many skills which promote social success - teamwork, conflict resolution, problem solving, and self-regulation. Each session begins with the opportunity to greet one another and share personal news. Games and group challenges are used in addition to group discussion. Throughout, youth are given the opportunity to offer their opinions
and ideas and listen to different points of view. Each session ends with a reflection on what was accomplished and what remains to work on. (For ASD/ID clients or clients with lower cognitive abilities or struggles with social skills)  

 

Teen/Young Adult Social Skills

Ages 16-21

Wednesdays at 5 PM

Teens/young adults in this group have the opportunity to experience and help to create a supportive social environment. The weekly session begins with an opportunity to share their recent personal experiences with peers and receive supportive feedback. Groups consist of either group discussion, therapeutic exercise, art activity, or a game. Teens/young adults practice a variety of social skills (showing interest in others, working together, setting boundaries, etc.) and coping skills (breathing exercises, movement, listening to music, self-expression, etc) (For ASD/ID clients or clients with lower cognitive abilities or struggles with social skills)

What to bring to your first Clifford Beers visit

It will be helpful if you make sure to have the following items with you during your first visit: 

  • Parent/legal guardian of child

  • Child in need of services

  • Insurance card

  • Social Security card (if available)

Please plan to be with us for approximately 90 minutes to two hours.  Note: we offer case management and family advocacy during our walk-in hours.
